Are you retired? Thinking about retiring? Planning for retirement? Worrying about retirement? If you are over the age of 20, you probably answered “yes” to at least one of those questions… then started fretting about your retirement income – having enough, enhancing what you have, or reinventing the whole concept of what being retired means.
I fall firmly in the camp of reinventing the concept of retirement. Even in my 40s, I was thinking ahead to what retirement and retirement income might look like and knew it would mean changing course, but not stopping work. It would involve some sort of business that would be fun, rewarding, and stimulating, and could be managed and marketed online to fit the lifestyle I wanted – freedom to travel and the financial flexibility to splurge on entertainment or other treats. Of course, back then I didn’t know where to start or what to do, so I invested a lot of time and money to figure it out. If that sounds intriguing and you would like to get there faster than I did, then I have a FREE book to offer you in just a moment.
Thankfully, those of us in the Baby Boomer bracket have a secret weapon - We have always been masters of reinvention, challenging the status quo and insisting on living life on our own terms. Studies indicate the majority of folks who are retired, approaching retirement, or planning for retirement say that they want to continue to working, either in their existing job or by starting a new career. And though some genuinely fear running out of money, many want to earn extra retirement income for those life-enhancing treats. The biggest shift may be in the mindset - These same Boomers believe continuing to work will help them stay mentally vibrant and give them an ongoing or revitalized sense of purpose which can extend their life in meaningful ways.
THINKING ABOUT EXTRA RETIREMENT INCOME? MAYBE IT’S TIME TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS
If the idea of starting your own business feels both appealing and daunting, consider this:
- Contrary to the stereotypes, many first-time entrepreneurs are in their 50s and 60s, (Julia Child) and some of America's biggest brands were started by folks over 50 (McDonald's, KFC, Coca Cola).
- Every year, thousands of people of every age and background take that first courageous step and start their own businesses. Many of them succeed and on their own terms.
- In your own business, issues like ageism, glass ceilings, or income caps simply do not exist.
REMOVING MENTAL BLOCKS TO STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS AFTER 50
Many of those now-successful entrepreneurs started with only a burning desire to be the master of their own destiny and enhance their retirement income. They hadn’t yet identified what they had to offer or how they would make money. Even those who understood they had valuable skills, experiences, and talents were stumped when it came to turning them into a business. But they didn't let that stop them.
Here’s a cold hard truth - Most people let their own mental blocks prevent them from having the lifestyle that they want.
In my case, a big stumbling block was knowing WHAT I wanted to do, but not knowing HOW to do it. No clue at all. Back then, I was just discovering the power of the internet and feeling a wee bit overwhelmed by what looked like a steep learning curve. I invested in all sorts of training and gradually learned a lot, but was still searching for good tools and a good system.
OLDER ENTREPRENEURS ARE THE NEW NORMAL
Contrary to popular belief, entrepreneurship isn’t just for 20-year-old kids writing code in their college-dorm rooms. According to the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity: In 2012, almost a quarter of new businesses were started by entrepreneurs 55 and older, a spike from 14 percent in 1996. Folks in their 50s, 60s, and beyond have deep wells of resourcefulness and resilience, some of which we’ve never tapped. We’ve become experts in so many things we can’t even name them all and often dismiss them, take them for granted, or aren’t even aware of them. We’ve earned degrees, managed careers, raised families, volunteered, and had untold adventures. We have proven again and again that we are masters of reinvention.
And now it’s time to harness it all on our own behalf.
